Participating in their 2nd Vinnies CEO Sleepout
One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference
I have decided to take another sleep to raise money for homeless people. Sadly I so often come across people sleeping on the street and every time I see them I think of the insights I had after my night "on the street" last year. Â
I didn't sleep well! I really don't think you can sleep well on two pieces of cardboard, but I could rest feeling completely safe. There was no risk to my life or to my belongings.
I had dinner similar to what they have from the food van but I had had a nice breakfast and lunch that day so I certainly didn't feel hungry.
Overnight I tossed and turned as my hips were getting a little sore and I listened to the rain in the Garden of Australian Dreams at the National Museum. I had the energy to marvell at the beauty of this place as well as the night sky (above the clouds) as I was wandering a little aimlessly in the middle of the night.
Next morning, I went home, had a shower, a coffee and breakfast. I might in fact have had the coffee first :). Â
My point is, I really didn't suffer - perhaps I was a little stiff, was a little uncomfortable and had sore hips in the morning but nothing that a nice coffee and a shower couldn't fix. People living on the streets do not have these luxuries, they do what I did that one night, but they do this day after day after day and they certainly cannot go to sleep feeling safe, go home for a coffee and a hot shower the next day and I daresay they rarely marvel at the beauty of the spaces around them!
Every night, thousands of Australians experience homelessness. But it doesn't have to be that way. This year I'm taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society to support Australians in need. For one night, I'll be sleeping outside as part of an eye-opening experience to raise awareness and bring home the realities of homelessness.
To help break the devastating cycle of homelessness, I need your support. Will you help me to reach my target? Donating $100 can make a huge difference to people who need it most.
