One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference
The Northern Territory has a significant and
disproportionate level of homelessness; the rate of homelessness sits at 12
times the national average, and year-on-year there are increased presentations
to homeless services at a pace far greater than the national trajectory.
Although severe crowding accounts for the vast majority of
homelessness in the Northern Territory, the Territory has 9.5 times the
national rate of people living in improvised dwellings, tents, or sleeping out;
as it’s known in the Northern Territory, sleeping rough or long grassing.
Approximately 80% of people sleeping rough in the Northern Territory are
Aboriginal.
The team at Vinnies NT does incredible work to support some
of the most vulnerable people residing in and visiting Darwin. I'm taking part
in this year's Sleep Out to raise awareness and funds to support the work that
Vinnies do.
